RE: Fuel Rants & Raves - Post 'Em Here!

Well said ,Strawfoot. Good to read some common sence here. Nuclear relieves pressure on oil usage and should be vigorously pursued. Yes, good job. What are the costs of each? What are the pros and cons of each. I think they (? who) shut down most of the nuclear plants years ago. Are they in mothball stage and just need to be re-certified and started back up?

RE: CA 299 or 36

No problem hijackin" I am in the motel Trees; across from Paul Bunyan (Trees of Mystery). The coast traffic is not that bad. Everyone is already home from the Labor Day weekend. Update on what road I took on the Harley: 36 It was curvy and all in all a pretty smooth road. There were some tight corners and some blind corners, but what do you expect for 140 miles of curvy road. I had breakfast in this very little hole (seats 10 or 12) in the wall cafe in Platina, Ca. (west of Red Bluff about 45 miles) that was the best I've had in years (home-fried potatoes and sausage omelet). So far 1040 miles and about $75.00 of premium gas.

RE: CA 299 or 36

Yes Cal.hwy 299 is a very good hwy. we used it all the time transporting wide & long mobile homes. like others have said hwy 36 is fine for a bike /car or pickup if you are not in a hurry , when they made the Hwy. they wanted to see how many hairpin turns they could get in a mile, and how close they could get the road to a tree Have a good trip Bob & Judy Well, funny you should mention a bike. I will be doing this trip on my HD. If 36 is a good road, but just curvy that sounds like the road for me. The wife will be staying home and I will be putting on a few miles, with some camping too. Is 36 more scenic then 299?

RE: Diesel along Oregon 101

We'll be travelling south along Oregon's Hwy 101. Can anyone recommend a source of fresh ULS diesel fuel at a reasonable price? Thanks in advance for your assistance. Florence has been very good at keeping the gas prices down. The diesel prices have not been coming down much at all along the hole coast.

RE: Crater Lake

I was at Crater Lake last weekend, but I didn't go into the campcround. The snow is gone for now. It will probably start snowing up there around late Sept. P.S. Kcabpilot: I think flying over Crater Lake is a restricted air space area.

CA 299 or 36

Which road has the nicest scenery, Calif. 299 west of Redding or 36 west of Red Bluff? Which is the nicer road? Thanks, KEN

RE: Most Beautiful State/Federal Road

Going to the Sun is very nice. In Oregon the McKenzie Pass 242 (max length 25ft) is very beautiful. Another Oregon highway is 138, which goes next to the Umpqua River. The BEST Scenic Highway is The Columbia River Historic Highway (also Max length 25ft).

RE: If you MUST have a SRW.......

It's a buyers market for just about everything (except gas). Shop around. Find a comfortable camper. I like my Citation. I also like Snowriver. I second the thought about finding a camper with the center of gravity as forward as possible. I also think the 19.5's are a good idea. I got a set for summer travels. Since your truck is your daily driver; air bags will be a great idea too. Take your time shopping and only buy once.

RE: Hitch extension for "new" Lance 1191

With the Super Hitch you can get any length extension you want...up to a limit... Ahh, just weld a second receiver at the end of a 48" extension, then plug another extension in :B Thanks guys for the correction.

RE: Where to go for Labor day?

I'm riding the back-roads highways Labor Day weekend. The wife doesn't want to go. I am taking Tuesday off too. I think I will go over to central Oregon and then down to Lasson NP. From there; who knows??? The camper get to stay at home, so I can save the expensive diesel for you all. http://i137.photobucket.com/albums/q205/orbiker/Idaho%20Trip%206-08/Idaho6-15-08013.jpg

RE: Hwy 199 Grants Pass to Crescent City

In the narrow parts, the driver WILL need to focus on the driving and NOT the scenery. It is a very beautiful drive. Just take it easy and use the pull-offs to let the traffic go by.

RE: Oregon - I5 and 101 - using 126 to connect the 2

Another thought might be to: get below Seattle on I-5 and then work your west to the ocean. The Oregon coast is best viewed form the southbound lane. ALL the pull-offs are on that side.

RE: Oregon - I5 and 101 - using 126 to connect the 2

I-5 between Portland and Eugene is some of the most boring road in Oregon. 126 from Bend or Eugene is all good road. 97 in central Oregon is a good 2 lane road with lots to see in both Washington and Oregon.

RE: Making the move to a TC - Advice request

Jim, You need to think of what conveniences you want when traveling. Some of the lighter camper don't have all the amenities.

RE: US Hwy 20 thru Oregon

We're traveling east out of Oregon next week and considering US Hwy 20 from Albany to Ontario, OR to join I-84. We're pulling a 33' fifth wheel. Looks like we travel through the Cascades to Bend then high desert to I-84. What is the character of the road. It appears after Bend it could be desolate. Is diesel fuel available. Any favorite RV parks or campgrounds? Any comments? Thanks in advance. Air boss Hwy 20 east of Albany and east of Sweethome is very curvy, but doable in a f'er. It is slow, with few passing lanes. Unless you are camping somewhere up past Sweethome, I would take 22 (out of Salem) or 126 (out of Eugene). Once you are in Sisters (GREAT tourist trap), you will need to decide on 26 (thru Mitchell which I prefer) or 20 (thru Burn). There is LOTS to see in the desolate central and eastern Oregon, depending on your interest.

RE: Crater Lake

Since you will be in the PU-camper and are mobile, I would camp where ever it is convient. If I was coming in the south entrance in the late evening, then Mazama would be my choice. Diamond Lake area is about 35 minutes from the north rim of Crater Lake. There are places outside the park to boondock if you like piece and quiet.

RE: Recommended route through Oregon... I-5 or Hwy 97?

I would go east on 84 to Biggs and do 97. 197 has more tight corners then 97. There is a nice museum in Moro. Shaniko (ghost town) is nice too. Diamond Lake and Crater Lake are must see places too.
